Insurance vs. doctor recommended C-Pap machine

I found your site tonight and know that it will be helpful.  I'm wondering if this post may help someone else who runs into this issue and also if you have any thoughts, comments, or suggestions.

I have had clinical insomnia (verified by a sleep study in 1999 but I didn't need it to know that I was in trouble!).  Had daytime sleepiness to the point of falling asleep while driving, having to pull over and fall asleep within 30 seconds and space out for an hour, depression, weight gain, falling asleep while talking to people, etc.  With medication (Trazadone) I managed to get to sleep much easier.

In April of this year I went back for another sleep study with a phenomenal doctor, Harvard grad, up on all the newest research.  She diagnosed me with sleep apnea caused by a slightly smaller than normal airway.  I had 24 pauses in breathing during the study.  She related that although my numbers were not alarming, she had seen people's lives changed through using a C-Pap at my levels.  "Why not?" I thought.

After a month's use (which my previous insurance covered at 100%) the following occurred: 1) the general anxiety that I carried for years, day in and day out, despite therapy, exercise, etc., suddenly evaporated!  In it's place was a person I didn't recognize - someone who could handle life's struggles and pressures with relative ease, 2) I was able to lose weight in a way that I never had before, 3) the heart arrythmia that showed up 14 months ago never bothered me, 3) and the depression I have battled for decades became 80% better!

I was thrilled!  Then I was forced to change insurances to a rather restrictive state medicaid plan.  I am self-employed and a funding which helped me pay my premiums disappeared and I was not able to pay the $550.00 a month it was going to cost me to continue with an excellent and outstanding insurance.

Here's the rub.  The new insurance decided that my "clinical numbers" did not match their criteria.  Despite the doctor's appeal, they upheld their denial.  Now, I am on the hook for the last 2-month's rental cost ($240.00) and will have to give it back.

I am understandably confused and angry.  As a previously state certified Emergency Medical Technician it was drilled into me that you "treat the patient not the machine."  Despite the significant improvement in my mood, general health, and affect, I am being denied an essential service.  And in it's stead, I will need to return to the sleep study doctor, follow-up with my PCP, and probably need another sleep study in the future.  All of this will cost the insurance company more than 3 times the cost of my current machine.

Any thoughts or comments to help me during this very confusing time?

In regards to this situation.  statistics now prove that patients with untreated sleep apnea cost 2  and one half times more in health care dollars.

This does not mean that your insurance is going to pay for your treatment even though you have clearly shown improvements in many areas.

Most insurances pay, based on the numbers shown by a sleep study.

CPAP Supply USA.com can help you.

At home sleep studies are now being recognized as accurate and many insurances are accepting them.  These tests are much more cost effective.  Please contact me if you would like more info about these.  In your case I don't think you will need another sleep study.

Have the physician you are working with, fax us the prescription for your recommended pressure.  Keep your mask as this is not returnable

and we can get you everything you need for a very reasonable price.  Get us the prescription today and your equipment will be shipped out today.

Please don't get discouraged..  We can help you and the many others who are in similair situations.

For those of you suffering from cardiac problems, diabetes and high blood pressure, please keep in mind that untreated sleep apnea can worsen these illnesses.

Please contact us ASAP so that we can get you the help you need and deserve.

It makes me very sad and also mad to hear about your situation.  Unfortunately your situation is fairly common.  This is a major reason our owners started this company.  So many of our customers are underinsured or have none at all.

Insurances are forced to base reimbursement on the numbers they receive,Consideration is not usually given to the positive outcomes of treatment

We can help you, please call me or email me back and we can discuss your options further.

I also feel so disheartened when I hear stories such as these. Please remember, though, many people do not have ANY coverage for CPAP or medical equipment on insurance policies for which they pay huge amounts each month, so you are definitely not alone in your situation. In fact, it is so common that companies such as CPAP Supply USA have made a huge market for supplies on the Internet - something not really done with many other healthcare supplies. That being said, there are a couple of "real world" tips I can give you to keep therapy effective, yet keep the costs down:

     1) Purchase an AUTO CPAP machine - The cost is significantly higher BUT the machine auto-adjusts for you at all times throughout the night. This can REALLY help with the recurrent need for a sleep study. While it is true that maintenance sleep studies are generally needed because of the fluctuations that can occur in one person's Obstructive Sleep Apnea, AUTO CPAP can remove this component because it is automatically adjusting each night for you anyway. Sleep studies needs are then drastically decreased.

    2) Use software to monitor YOUR OWN therapy - As far as dr follow-ups are concerned, while they are important, many doctors don't even do them! And if they do, I often hear stories of how doctors are unwilling to listen to problems with therapy or to download data from a machine. If you choose a machine that is "data-capable" (btw, all AUTOs are data-capable, so two birds with one stone) you can actually purchase software and MONITOR YOUR OWN THERAPY. Now granted, you are not a physician, so you may still require visits to a sleep doc if problems arise, but you will find that using the software, you can basically view a mini-sleep study from each night on your machine. Leak rate, Apnea-Hypopnea Index, and average pressure are all monitored. There is a great community of CPAP users out there who have really taken control of their therapy and feel they get better results because of it.

    3) Spend time (and possibly money??) to get the RIGHT mask - Mask fit and comfort are HUGE in therapy. Making sure that your mask fits properly and is comfortable really do increase compliance. Also, CLEAN your mask cushion each morning to increase the lifespan of the mask. Facial oils can cause serious damage to the soft silicone mask cushions are made of.

    4) Remind yourself of the benefits you are receiving from CPAP - Consider the cost of general healthcare for problems that may be associated with sleep apnea - meds/therapy for anxiety and depression, meds for other conditions that may be related to OSA, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, and overall quality of life when not using sleep therapy. Those real world costs probably outweigh therapy costs by a longshot!

Anyway, hth! Please let us know about any other questions we maybe can help with!

Re: Insurance vs. doctor recommended C-Pap machine

I'm contacting you because my husband has sleep apnea.  He was diagnosed over 2 years ago given a prescription and then told that our insurance didn't cover the cost of the equipment.  We purposely got insurance to see about getting him help.  Our fault for not checking to see if we were covered. We wasted (in my opinion) a lot of money on insurance, all to be told they could not help.   The sleep study was covered.  Anyway since then, we've gone out of business and don't have insurance.  At that time the cost - we were told - was somewhere in the range of $1,000 to $1,200 which we couldn't afford.

My question is this.   We still have the prescription.  Is it possible to use this same prescription for all the equipment?  I read above in this forum that we could fax the prescription and you could help us find the proper equipment?  He really needs it bad, but we don't have resource to cover anything.  Maybe we can come up with payments or something, but we're ready to file bankruptcy too.  Not a nice story.

    Thanks for your help

I am sorry to hear your insurance plan has served of little benefit.

The good news is that your prescription is still good and CPAPs on our Website www.cpapsupplyusa.com has prices beginning at $215.

You will need to get a mask that fits but these prices can begin as low as $45.00.

Please contact us and let us know if we can help...Have you tried contacting Respironics or Resmed, These are the largest makers of CPAPs and sometimes they can offer assistance.

I hope things get better for you and your husband soon.
